Visy Crane OCR

Container OCR camera system for crane operations

Visy Crane OCR for ship-to-shore (STS) cranes automatically images all container sides and recognizes container IDs, ISO codes, dangerous goods labels (IMDG, ADR), and other targets of interest such as seal presence and door direction, while containers are being handled by cranes.

Robust system environment with exceptional performance

Due to harsh operating environment and multiple parallel functions, the Visy Crane OCR system setup and equipment environment utilizes PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras mounted on the portal beams and crane legs without moving parts to enhance system reliability and durability. The system captures high-quality images of which Visy’s in-house container OCR software makes the required recognitions. The acquired images and data are brought to Visy Crane Gate application and exchanged with TOS in real-time.

Features according to your operations

All Visy Crane OCR applications are designed according to the operational needs of each customer. The system setup is chosen case by case to support all container handling cases, lifting types (twin, single, tandem, quad, tank), and spreader flying paths, as well as backreach and platform operations. Container OCR features and other recognitions (for example terminal tractors / license plates) are set and customized according to the customer requirements to support and cover the entire container handling process.

Visy LaneView images containers on lane or platform operations of STS cranes with high-resolution PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) and fixed OCR cameras installed on the crane frame. The solution recognizes container markings and seal presence and captures images for damage inspection purposes. The PTZ cameras are easily controlled to provide the best view for all lift cases, and Visy automation applications accurately calculate the container flight path to optimize the imaging moment.

Visy TopView identifies container IDs from the roofs of containers. The solution consists of robust cameras installed in the middle and both ends of spreaders with efficient illuminators to capture high-quality images regardless of the time of day or environmental condition. Visy TopView prevents time-consuming false moves and incorrect stacking locations by recognizing every container and verifying that loading and unloading processes proceed as planned.

Visy TTView recognizes ID numbers and other roof markings of terminal tractors to automatically link the container handling equipment to the lifting tasks. High-resolution cameras with strong infrared pulse are installed on the crane trolleys to capture images of the terminal tractors’ roofs. Matching the terminal tractors instantly with the on-going lifting tasks enables effortless tracking of cargo and improves visibility of movements. In addition to OCR cameras, RFID (radio-frequency identification) devices and license plate recognition can be combined in the TTView solution.
